Answer and Essay Writing Strategy

Answer Writing Strategy
  • Wrote in points wherever possible. Even in the optional. And I write full sentences as points, not phrases. In my previous attempts I used to write answers in paragraph form and I never got any marks. I used to know the whole paper but I still did not get any marks because of writing in paragraph form.
  • Underlined key words – did not ever do this before so it must have helped.
  • Did not give a beginning or an ending paragraph. No time generally. Might have done for a few answers where it was absolutely necessary to start giving the points. I used to write nice starting and ending paras earlier but did not finish the exam paper…so I skipped it this time.
  • Did not use coloured pens. Mainly used the pencil or the pen I was already writing with to underline.
  • Diagrams if possible or needed. Not always possible or needed. Drew them in pen or pencil as convenient.
  • Did not lie to the examiner like in my previous attempts. I wrote only those questions that I knew. Did not attempt questions I did not know. In my previous attempts I used to do that. I saved time and energy by not trying to fool the examiner and writing just any nonsense. Mostly in such cases we keep writing the same thing again and again and I think it might just irritate the examiner. So I did not do that this time.
  • Did not worry about the word limit. Wrote whatever and as much as I knew. It might have been more or might have been less.

Essay Writing Strategy
  • Choosing the topic – I choose topics which can have something substantial to write and not philosophical. This time I wrote on Standardized Testing and Tourism. Both of them have multiple dimensions to talk about. I made the mistake of choosing a topic in an earlier attempt where I knew one part of the question too much and not enough of the other part …wrote it very enthusiastically and got very little marks.
  • Language skill matters in the essay so I wrote a nice grammatically correct one but did not use too complicated words…just to keep it easy to read for the examiner. I focused on not writing colloquial language and did try to keep my spellings in check.
  • I used Subheadings – something I learnt from reading the blog of Gaurav Aggarwal Sir, last year’s AIR -1.
  • I underlined in a couple of places in the essay as well.
  • I made one or two diagrams where I could.

  6. Congratulations Ma'am for achieving the top position in one of the toughest examination of our country and thanks for sharing your strategy with us.
Ma'am I have a doubt regarding answer and essay writing.
Many of the selected candidates said that they wrote both in small paragraphs and points.
Second is Roman Sir suggested not to use sub headings and underlining in essay whereas Gaurav Sir suggested to use them.
I am in a big dilemma what to use and what not to.
It will be very kind of you if you help me regarding this matter :)

  9. Hi madam..i wrote mains in 2012 ..got 98 n 98 in Gs...at that time ..i did not join test series..n.my knowledge levels were less. In 2013 bcoz of changed pattern took break attended test series...gave mains this year...attended pt..but fail to make in final list. After getting scores ..i was shocked to see my gs2 n gs3 svores in 70s. I was forced to write in paras..intro n conclusion..by test series people. I think my own writing style with points is right. Previously i wrote in my own style and did not attempt few. Whereas this year attempted all..but did not score. Please guide me.

    1. I have written everything I did in the blog post above. I don't think 70s is bad score though! It is equivalent to 90s of 2012! I wrote in points...and gave intro and conclusion only in a few cases....I think that worked for me....Maybe you can try it as well? Best of luck!

  16. Thanks a ton Ma'am for starting this blog. All I want to say is you inspire us and this generation in as many ways as possible. Apart from being a voracious reader, you are definitely a concise and to the point sort of writer. Which is why I am sure, you scored so high in written. You have got 920 in written, I browsed through the whole list but no one has got 900+ marks in written. In fact next few in line are lagging way below in written when compared to you. Quite a lead, I must say, would you also please share some sample answers and essays if you would have written something for practice or if you could reproduce from your memory how you had written answers in mains. Please ma'am it would help us immensely. & Please continue writing :)

And I have never written a single practice answer or essay. Never attended any test series etc either. Sorry! Best of luck!

My question is : What is the basic difference between the terms : Discuss,Comment, Analyze,Evaluate, Examine,Explain?
Because Sometimes we can’t judge that what is really asked.
So Requesting you to differentiate this terms. Thanks :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The way I see it...Discuss, Comment, Analyze, Critically Analyze, Evaluate, Examine are all basically asking for Critical Analysis. I always treated them as Critically analyze when writing answers.
Explain on the other hand talks about expanding on the concept.
Hope this helps! Best of luck!

  21. Ira Ma'am please also write about your answering structure for Ethics Case Studies? Since they have multiple sub-questions, are we supposed to write separate answers for each one of them or are we to write one complete answer with dedicated paras/points for each of the case studies?

Also, I find it confusing when people say that you need to first mention available courses of action and then justify the one you'd choose. I found myself wanting for space because this approach makes me write too much for each of the sub-questions which doesn't fit into the limited space provided.

If possible, could you also upload/redirect me to a sample ethics case study answer to facilitate better understanding? Or, by taking a sample case study such as the one on complaint of sexual harassment against you (a no-nonsense, honest officer) with the Women's Commission (Question 11 as per the question paper uploaded by UPSC)?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Kindly do reply ma'am...I know its exhausting to answer specific queries but it would be immensely helpful !

      Delete
    2. Write separate analysis of each sub-question given. The way I wrote it is -Give pros and cons of each course of action given. Then give your own courses of action. I never thought of more than 2-3 more actions. Then finally answer which is the best and why. It doesnt take too much space. Try cutting on the words...for example
      Action 1 - Pros....
      Cons....
      Action 2 - Pros....
      Cons....
This wont take up too much space. I didnt repeat what I had already answered. Like I didnt do the analysis again! Just said, that one is bad and this is good because of these reasons.

If I get time, I'll try solving that answer and scanning and posting it...But I am really running short of it currently, so please don't hold your breath!
      Best of luck!

I'm from isolated area... didn't step into any institute.... self preparation... it would immense help if u put up the list mam.... and please mention what exactly to read from those sites... what you use to extract from govt. sites

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. There is no list as such! You will just have to take each term from the syllabus and find relevant sites for it. For example, Take disaster management and just search Government sites about it. Also there is no set pattern on what to read from them. You have to use your judgement. Best of luck!

    1. I don't exactly remember but let me try. Tourism: Can this be the next big thing in India?
I dont remember my introduction but the rest of the essay was structured in the following manner
      1. Discussion on how tourism is beneficial - so mentioned the social, economic, environmental, etc type of benefits - used a diagram I think. Not sure.
      2. Discussed the types of tourism opportunities - and the regions where the potential exists.- Again used a diagram I think, not sure.
      3. The reality of whether it can happen or not. what are the things promoting and blocking it.
      4. What are the potential negative fall-outs
      5. Future course of action if it is to be promoted
      6. Conclusion on whether it is or not the best big thing

I did not use these numbers...these are just for your reference about the flow of the essay. Also these ideas were discussed in multiple paragraphs and not one.
      Hope this helped!
      Best of luck!

  32. Hello mam.

Please tell me the way you wrote answers in the GS paper 4 (ethics)- Point form or paragraph form? and apart from the booklist for this paper, what special u think contributed to such beautiful marks in this paper?.

And optional subject- coaching and all people say---optional to paragraph mein hi hona chahie?..Is this the rule that you also followed or you think it doesn't matter?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Please check my responses elsewhere for ethics 4 ....Point and paras both..for example, happiness question cannot be points! I did not do anything special, but this is my strong suit anyway cause I have discussed such stuff generally with people...that helped!

I used to write my optional in para till last year...this year wrote even that in points - wherever needed! I got around 117 marks more than last year (188 vs. 305) ...though the question paper was relatively better this year as well.

  34. Hello Mam.
    Ethics paper Specific query.

    1. How had you written or how would you write this question of 2014 paper. If you could elaborate.

    Q. In the context of defence services, ‘patriotism’ demands readiness to even lay down one’s life in protecting the nation. According to you, what does patriotism imply in everyday civil life? Explain with illustrations and justify your answer.

and this case study from the exam..

    Q.
You are a no-nonsense, honest officer. You have been transferred to a remote district to head a department that is notorious for its inefficiency and callousness. You find that the main cause of the poor state of affairs is the indiscipline of a section of employees. They do not work themselves and also disrupt the working of others. You first warned the troublemakers to mend their ways or else face disciplinary action. When the warning had little effect, you issued a show cause notice to the ringleaders. As a retaliatory measure, these troublemakers instigated a woman employee amongst them to file a complaint of sexual harassment against you with the Women’s Commission. The Commission promptly seeks your explanation. The matter is also publicized in the media to embarrass you further. Some of the options to handle this situation could be as follows :

Give your explanation to the Commission and go soft on the disciplinary action.
Ignore the Commission and proceed firmly with the disciplinary action.
Brief your higher-ups, seek directions from them and act accordingly.
Suggest any other possible option(s). Evaluate all of them and suggest the best course of action, giving your reasons for it.

Plz answer these questions if not now, then in your spare time maybe.

About Ethics, it is not about reading. This is the only paper you can do without that. Just sit and think about those topics. Form your own opinions. Also try to figure yourself out. You need to have discovered yourself for that exam. The questions are about you. The person you are and how you react. So the only thing you need to study for this is, yourself! Your motivations, and why you think the way you do! Work on that a bit more maybe? I have mentioned how to handle a case study somewhere above. Also I spoke about it at SPIPA yesterday. They said they would be posting the link on YouTube to the video of the interaction, so maybe you can check that. Best of luck! If you have any specific questions, you can send them to me.

Congratulations to you on your success. I have gone through all your videos so most of queries got answered.

There is one problem which is specific to me. Please reply I would be highly obliged. Problem is that I have done only my static portion which I have revised 2-3 times also I have ignored current affairs so whenever I attempt writing answers I just couldn't write. I feel I lack content. It baffles me because answer writing has never been an issue for me.

Do you feel it is okay at the initial stage of prep? Have started writing answers too early? Is this gonna go as and when I complete my mains syllabus and keep up with current affairs?

Lastly, there is a request could you please evaluate my 1-2 answers from 2014 mains paper if I post here. May be after 2-3 months so that I have some mains prep by then.

Hope I could meet you in person someday. Thank you for being an inspiration. Almost forgot 'Happy Independence day' and your article in Indian express was very well written.

Answers must be supplemented with as much “differentiators” as possible – elements like diagrams, definitions, boxes etc that differentiate your copy from the rest.
